Canadian Trucking Alliance Calls for Speedy Implementation of enviroTruck Technologies in Address to National Weights and Dimensions Task Force

At a presentation to the National Task Force on Vehicle Weights and Dimensions in Toronto, the Canadian Trucking Alliance has stressed the importance for all provincial governments to act swiftly on regulations that would allow weight and length considerations for key components of CTA's enviroTruck

"The adoption of provincial regulations to allow technologies associated with CTA's enviroTruck will assist the Canadian trucking industry in remaining competitive and will have significant positive impacts on the environment," says CTA's Geoff Wood, Vice President of Operations and Safety.

Specifically, CTA is asking for:

  • 1000 lbs exemption from gross vehicle weights for APU's and new engine technology;
  • that wide based tires be permitted at 9000 kgs per axle Ontario east and 8500 kgs Manitoba west to allow parity with duals on drive axles;
  • the ability for carriers to incorporate more fuel efficient boat tails on their trailer fleets without dimension penalties;
  • additional weight exemptions are explored for trailer skirts and other aerodynamic option;
  • that length and weight considerations be given for moose bumpers.

CTA remains optimistic that governments understand the importance of the rapid deployment of this technology and the corresponding importance of these weight allowances coupled with federal financial incentives.
